Bisphenol A in dental materials

چکیده

What is bisphenol A? Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical used primarily for the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Some 3 billion kilos of BPA are produced worldwide and the use of this chemical is so ubiquitous that it has been detected in the urine of 93 per cent of the population over 6 years of age (Welshons et al., 2006; Calafat et al., 2005). A recent study found that BPA was present in the saliva of all patients in the study group prior to the placement of a sealant and ranged from 0.07 to 6 ng/ml at baseline (Zimmerman et al., 2010).

Bisphenol-A in Dental Composites

The presence of plastic polymers in dental composites has caused uncertainty in the minds of people who are suspicious of the potential impact of plastics on human health. In particular, one component of composite resins, bisphenol-A (BPA), has attracted attention because it can act as a xenoestrogen. For better or for worse, all dental materials are non-biological chemicals, and the only way w...
